Why Margate Deserves Honest Leadership: Addressing My Opponent’s Tax Issues

As we approach the final days of this election, it’s crucial to address a significant issue that has come to light regarding my opponent. For over 15 years, my opponent has failed to pay the correct property taxes, claiming ignorance despite holding a degree in economics. This raises serious questions about his honesty and responsibility.

It speaks volumes of Commissioner Anthony Caggiano's character, or lack thereof, that for 8 years he sat on the dais voting on what the residents of Margate would be paying in taxes when he was paying a mere pittance of what he should have been paying for over 15 years. And what is even more disturbing is he had the audacity to rant numerous times about the large percentage of Margate residents who aren't paying their fair share of taxes!

Understanding the Issue

Escrow accounts are designed to ensure that property taxes and homeowners insurance are paid on time. Each month, a portion of the mortgage payment is set aside in the escrow account, and the lender uses these funds to pay the taxes and insurance when they are due. Homeowners receive annual statements detailing these transactions, and any surplus funds are refunded with checks that both homeowners must sign.

Given my opponent’s educational background, it is hard to believe that he was unaware that he was paying the incorrect amount of taxes for his property for such an extended period of fifteen (15) years. The annual statements and surplus check should have alerted him to the issue. Ignorance is not an excuse, especially when it comes to fulfilling one’s financial responsibilities.

Margate deserves leaders who are responsible, informed, and dedicated to serving the community with integrity. My opponent’s failure to pay his fair share of taxes not only undermines public trust but also deprives the city of essential revenue needed for public services and infrastructure.
